a couple days i ago, i was tutoring this refugee from cuba. i guess i should begin by saying that once a week, i tutor non-English speakers. this particular man had a low English proficiency. luckily, i did take spanish and could somehow remember words to communicate with him! literally, we were carrying on conversations in spanish.... i stopped a few times to laugh at how insanely funny this may have looked like! i brought this up to sort of shed some light on the nature of immigrant status. more than not, immigrants come here as economic or political refugees. it is so important to remember that.
on a similar note, i am tutoring a korean girl who just arrived here to go to university. i met her at a coffee shop near school. it was so nice to spend time with her. she is so "korean" and by that, i mean everything that i love and miss about korea, she embodies! i invited her to dinner tonight. i am making stuffed shells and cinnamon swirl cake...fingers are crossed that it will be edible!

Love to hear about what you are up to :) Your gentle spirit is being used in help others and that's really awesome! Miss you girl
